Welcome to WISE

The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE) was established at the University of Waterloo in 2008. The Institute comprises more than 80 faculty members with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working as multi-disciplinary research teams across Engineering, Science and Environment. The Institute is the focal point at UW for research in energy studies. In collaboration with utilities, private sector partners, government agencies and civil society groups, the Institute's goal is to foster the development of innovative technologies and alternatives to existing energy production and delivery systems, and to promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Our vision is to be recognized internationally as a centre of excellence in energy research and to contribute to the development of energy policies and strategies that enhance the social, economic, and environmental performance of the energy system. We emphasize innovation as the key driver in the transformation of the energy system. Our focus is on research initiatives that provide both timely solutions for the near term and shape the evolution of energy use over the longer-term.

UNION GAS Supports University of Waterloo Research
to Expand Smart Grid into ‘Smart Energy Network ’

$10,000 grant awarded to sustainability institute as part of centennial celebration

WATERLOO, ON – September 15, 2011: A University of Waterloo research project looking to expand the concept of a “smart grid” beyond electricity is getting a boost from Union Gas, through a $10,000 grant awarded today as part of the company’s year-long centennial celebration.

The research project, led by the University’s Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE), focuses on the idea of using advanced information technology to create a fully integrated “smart energy network”, one that includes natural gas, renewables and, in the future, would be able to incorporate new fuels such as hydrogen

Mahindra Satyam Announces Development of Smart Grid

Research and Innovation Center at the University of Waterloo

Company Signs MOU with the University for the Global Expansion of Ontario’s Clean and Green Investment Program

 

Waterloo, ON – September 6, 2011: Mahindra Satyam, a leading global consulting and IT services provider, today announced the development of Ontario’s first Smart Grid Research and Innovation Center (RIC) on the University of Waterloo Campus in Ontario, Canada. The RIC will provide students, teachers and IT professionals the tools to foster and evaluate innovative developments of next generation smart grid technology. The Center development is part of an ongoing strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Mahindra Satyam and the University of Waterloo.

WISE Advisory Council

The Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (WISE) is pleased to announce the appointment of its Advisory Council.  Members of the Council comprise senior leaders from business community engaged in the development of the energy sector and shaping its future directions. The Council members will help guide our future initiatives, provide input to our strategic research directions and help to further the Institute’s goals and mission. The focus of the Institute is to develop innovative solutions to the challenges of the energy sector, to ensure effective knowledge transfer from academia to the commercial realm and to foster paths towards a sustainable energy future.  

The University of Waterloo has embraced sustainable energy as a strategic research priority with significant commitments of infrastructure, curriculum and personnel to promote leadership in this important field.
